1996 – Lake Clark National Park I

A taste of the horror to come – alders.

With some experience under our belts, we chose a spot in southern Alaska. We got a bit more than we bargained for, with drenching rains and many long slogs through wet tundra and swamps. The biggest eye-opener was the brush – dense tangles of interlocking mature alder, punctuated by spiny devil’s club (just when you need something to grab onto) is a bitch. But a classic glacier walk on Shamrock Glacier, plus the wildlife and the solitude, kept us coming back. We got our first taste of waiting out the weather for our bush plane here.
