2003 – Kobuk Valley National Park/Noatak National Preserve I

The year of the carnivores – many grizzlies, wolves – plus great weather.

Another great trip, with beautiful Brooks Range scenery and plenty of wildlife. This journey ended in great drama, with the Noatak River rising silently in the night, from flooding many miles away (no rain for us). This left us trapped on a large sandbar, with the prospect of either floatplane pickup or a dangerous swim across to the riverbank. Fortunately the flood peaked before we were forced to flee, and Buck plucked us off our precarious island.
