2005 – Aniakchak National Park

Dodging bears and salmon, the group climbs the Aniakchak River to enter a world within a volcano.

We’d hoped to get National Geographic interested in the reprise of Geologist Father Hubbard’s expedition 75 years earlier, but they weren’t interested. After a nice beginning at the grizzly-backed ocean beach, we slogged up the Aniakchak River, constantly aware of the bears and eagles feasting on the migrating salmon, which were everywhere. Our entry into the crater of the volcano was dramatic and we soaked in the spectacular interior of the crater for several days. We exited over the rim and made our way down to Port Heiden, enjoying literally wide open spaces.
