1999 – Katmai National Park

A small team slogs through volcanic ash and tackles glaciers, raging rivers,
and sandstorms.

Katmai was a trip for athletes. We carried very heavy loads (approaching 100 lbs. in some cases), with uncertain glacial travel in the offing. We were forced to hunker down for a couple of days high on the side of Mt. Katmai due to poor weather and visibility. We emerged from the mountains into the Valley of 10,000 Smokes, and got smacked with a heavy sandstorm. Not a spectacular wildlife trip, though we did get closeup views of grizzly near the end.
